Nick Reiner, the son of the famous American director Rob Reiner, pleaded not guilty in a court in Los Angeles, in the trial in which he is accused of killing his parents, in a double murder that shook Hollywood at the end of 2025.
Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty Monday in front of the Los Angeles court in the case in which he is accused of murdering his parents, director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The case, which caused a wave of reactions in the film world, concerns a double murder committed in December 2025, reports Agerpres.
The bodies of the two were discovered on December 14, in their home in the exclusive Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. The 78-year-old director, known for films such as “When Harry Met Sally” and “A Few Good Men,” and his 70-year-old wife were allegedly stabbed to death.
Mental health, possibly at the heart of the process
Nick Reiner’s mental state could become a central element of the trial. He has a history of substance abuse and was diagnosed with schizophrenia several years ago.
If convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole or even the death penalty, given that it has not been formally abolished in the state of California. Although executions have been suspended since 2019, through a moratorium, the death penalty remains under state law.
At this stage of the trial, a plea of not guilty is considered routine, regardless of the defense’s subsequent strategy. The court ordered that Nick Reiner remain in custody, with his next appearance scheduled for April 29.
Famous lawyer withdrawn from the file
The hearing was originally due to take place in January, but was postponed after his lawyer, Alan Jackson, decided to withdraw from the case. He invoked “circumstances beyond our control” to explain the decision.
The lawyer, known in Hollywood for his involvement in famous cases, emphasized that he is prohibited “legally and ethically” to provide details of his withdrawal. However, he has publicly stated that, in his opinion, “Nick Reiner Not Guilty of Murder”. Later, the court appointed an ex officio lawyer to represent the defendant.
What would have happened before the murder
According to information published in the American media, Nick Reiner lived in an outhouse on his parents’ property. The day before the tragedy, he would have caused an incident at a party organized by TV presenter Conan O’Brien, where he had been invited along with his parents.
According to the same sources, a violent argument would have broken out between son and father. On the day of the murder, the Reiners were supposed to have lunch with former US President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama and were also scheduled for a massage session.
A massage therapist arrived at their residence, but after receiving no answer at the door, contacted the couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner. She is the one who first discovered the father’s body, and the medical crews who arrived at the scene later found the mother’s body.
American police arrested Nick Reiner that same night, a few kilometers away from the crime scene.
