“Out of concern for the well-being of my team and myself, I have been advised by my security team not to travel to the festival in Romania tonight due to safety concerns related to the protests in the area,” the rapper wrote on Twitter, hours before her concert, according to Rolling Stones. “I look forward to seeing you all on another occasion.“
Minaj continued: “As a mother, I have to make sure I make the right decisions to get home to my son and get my team back to their families. Ignoring the advice of the security team at this point is not what I think I should be doing. I love you and thank you for your understanding and support.“
“It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce that Nicki Minaj has just canceled her performance due to concerns for the safety of herself and her team in Romania… This has nothing to do with SAGA and is beyond our control,” SAGA Festival organizers said in a press release on Sunday.
“The news has left us all devastated and we know it’s a huge disappointment for everyone, as it is for us.Organizers added that all non-scanned tickets for Sunday’s festival will be refunded.
The singer did not specify which protest raised safety concerns, and international news services have not reported much on the situation, but it is about “civil society groups planning a march in Bucharest“Monday, July 8, a protest in which about 3,000 people would participate.
Despite the seemingly low threat level of the protest, Minaj’s security team still deemed the situation a “safety concern.” However, Minaj said she will take the stage in London on Friday for “a special headlining gig at Wireless Festival.“
