Nicușor Dan, appeal to education and sustainable policies after the situation at Praid: “The tragedy reminds us how vulnerable the communities are”

Nicușor Dan sent a message on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Geography Society in Romania. “The tragedy from Salina Praid reminds us painfully how vulnerable the communities are in the face of extreme natural phenomena”, said the President of Romania. He stressed the importance of knowing the geographical space in understanding and managing the challenges we are facing.

“The tragedy of Salina Praid reminds us painfully how vulnerable the communities are in the face of extreme natural phenomena, which not only affect the local infrastructure or economy, but, above all, the people whose living is endangered, sometimes from one day to another.”said the head of state at the homage session of the Anniversary Congress of the Geography Society, held at the Parliament Palace.

Between 6 and 8 June 2025, the anniversary Congress of the Geography Society of Romania takes place, held under the auspices of the Royal Family at the Romanian Academy and at the Parliament Palace, says Agerpres.

He highlighted the essential role of geography in education and in the formation of citizens responsible for the environment and community.

“Geography, as a school discipline, teaches students about identity, belonging and responsibility towards the environment, offers them essential landmarks to understand the world. In this context, teachers who teach this subject become trainers of civic consciousness, guiding the new generations to an informed, balanced and solidarity vision” said Dan.

The president appreciated the contribution of the Geography Society, founded in 1875 under the patronage of King Carol I, and sent congratulations to his members for involving the sustainable development of the country. Also, encouraged to continue to participate actively in the debates on educational policies, digitization, community resilience and spatial planning.

Nicușor Dan visited on Saturday, May 31, Salina Praid, seriously affected by floods. On that occasion, the president announced that he will ask the prime minister to establish responsibilities and to carry out, within 3-4 months, a study to show whether the entire saline can be saved or only the tourist area.
