The head of state announced that, in the next period, a national debate on misinformation will be organized, with the participation of several relevant institutions.

“It is a working team that works with representatives of several institutions. It will be a debate to have, say, in the next two months, if not even faster”, said Nicușor Dan on Thursday night to Friday, at the end of the European Council meeting.

He stressed that, beyond the technical measures to combat misinformation – such as identifying and rapidly eliminating false content – the substantive problem remains the lack of confidence of citizens in state institutions.

“The fundamental issue, in my opinion, is how the Romanian state reaches the confidence of the people he has lost and this is, in my opinion, a matter of time, for years,” the president explained.

In the same statement, Nicușor Dan also commented on the recent decision to reduce or eliminate school scholarships, stressing that it belongs to the government and the ministry. The president said that, according to the information received, the current scholarship system in Romania is unique in Europe and problematic.

“Without being a specialist in this field, I was told, on the one hand, that the scholarship system we have in the pre -university there are nowhere in Europe and that it is abnormal to call what they take 30% of the students in the system”, said Nicușor Dan.

He stressed that he supports the need for a reform based on equity and real performance, not on subjective criteria.

“In addition, the evaluation criterion is absolutely non -objective, given that this scholarship depends on the teachers you have in school and is uneven at national level”, said the president.
