Nicuşor Dan: “I don’t think we can talk about influences at the CCR level. Court judges live in the middle of society”

President Nicusor Dan stated, on Thursday, in Washington, where he participated in the meeting of the Council for Peace initiated by Donald Trump, that there can be no talk of “influences” at the level of judges of the Constitutional Court of Romania, referring to Wednesday’s CCR decision.

“The judges (CCR – no) were appointed there by the Chamber, the Senate, the president and beyond, except for some absolutely informal matters, I don’t think we can talk about influences at the level of Court judges. On the other hand, Court judges live in the middle of society and I think that in matters where the interpretation can be on one side or the other, you have to look at the society that wants it”explained Nicuşor Dan in the Thursday evening press conference, according to Agerpres.

We remind you that on Wednesday, February 18, the Constitutional Court of Romania rejected the referral made by the High Court of Cassation and Justice regarding the Bolojan Government’s project to reform magistrates’ pensions, establishing that the normative act complies with the provisions of the Constitution.

The decision was adopted with six votes to reject the appeal and three to accept it. Simina Tănăsescu, Csaba Astalos, Dacian Dragoş, Iulia Scîntei, Mihaela Ciochină and Mihai Busuioc would have voted in favor of the rejection. On the other hand, Cristian Deliorga, Gheorghe Stan and Bogdan Licu would have spoken in favor of admitting the objection raised by the High Court.

The decision comes after five successive postponements of the debates.

The day before, in an interview given to Radio Romania Actualităţi, President Nicusor Dan stated that the procrastination of the discussions regarding magistrates’ pensions affected both the credibility of the Constitutional Court and the image of the Romanian state.
