“I am especially honored to be with you here”, This is how Nicușor Dan started his speech, thanking the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, because he launched the invitation.
The leader from Cotroceni made jokes.
“You know that, starting in 2011, this day is also celebrated in Romania, the Day of the Romanian Language, officially. And maybe it would not be bad to copy the great national dictation. We could start with the political class for example ”, added the Romanian official.
“You are an example for Europe”
Subsequently, the President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, stressed that Moldovan citizens offer an example to the whole world by fighting the Romanian language, as well as by the resistance they show to the pressures they are subjected to, referring to Moscow.
“Returning to serious, I confess that I am very exciting because as the president said, I always considered the Romanian language: I was born, I spoke Romanian, I did the school in Romanian and in my opinion, you gave an example to the whole world through the struggle that you gave in this time, And now, again, you are an example for Europe and the whole world because of how you try to defend democracy in the face of the pressure that come from the same side. And prove by this that you are more European than Europeans and that your place is in the European Union. The Romanian language is, beyond being an identity, a responsibility for each of us. Romania and the Republic of Moldova are countries that have common values, which need each other and it is our responsibility to help each other, so that these two countries have a bright future in the world we all build. From Romania, from my personal part, all the friendship and openness to build these connections ”, added Nicușor Dan.
The President of Romania has wished the participants success in the competition for testing knowledge in Romanian, known as the “Great National Dictation”, organized by the Ministry of Education and Research, under the aegis of the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova. The event reached its third edition.
“Much success, to the participants!”, Nicușor Dan concluded.
And the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, mentioned that the number of participants in the “Great National Dictation” of 2025 increased significantly compared to the first edition organized in 2023.
“Thank you for the presence at the third edition of the Great National Dictation-an event that has become an increasingly appreciated tradition. The fact that the number of participants increases from year to year shows that the Romanian language gathers, unites us and inspires us. Mr. President, your presence here, in Chisinau, is a sign of friendship and solidarity, but especially a proof that the Romanian language remains the strongest bridge between the two banks of the Prut. It carries our history, keeps our culture and binds us to our values and traditions ”, said the leader from Chisinau.
“The word is a great power”
But Maia Sandu stressed that “The Romanian language should not be celebrated only one day a year, but it must be honored and honest every day – when we choose to speak correctly, write carefully, to use the expressions and richness of its vocabulary. Thus, we keep it alive and we send it to future generations. The Romanian language is our connection with the past – with the writers, singers and teachers who fought for it – but also with the future, with the children who will use it to build tomorrow’s science, culture and art. The word is a great power. He is not a given. There were times when, just because you said the name of the Romanian language, you risk being mocked or persecuted. Today we can speak freely – and we must defend and value this fundamental right for ourselves and for future generations. Moreover, the Romanian language is not only the official language of the European Union, but it is spread throughout the continent and beyond it. It is no longer unusual to hear it on the streets of Rome, Paris or London, in the markets of Berlin and Madrid, but also across the ocean – in the United States, Canada or even in the distant Australia. It is a reason for joy and pride alike. Wherever we go, the Romanian language remains the compass of our identity and the living connection with the roots. I am also glad that in recent years, better conditions have been created so that citizens belonging to ethnic minorities in the Republic of Moldova can learn Romanian. It is an important step, because the Romanian language can bring us closer to each other, regardless of the community from which we come. It has the power to unite us and to help us build, together, a stronger and stronger society. ”
On August 31, President Nicușor Dan made a visit to the Republic of Moldova on the occasion of the Romanian Language Day. It is the third visit of Nicușor Dan in the neighboring country since taking over the mandate, after the official one on June 10 and the private one of August 8, when he was accompanied by his partner and their two children.
