President Nicușor Dan participates on Thursday, February 12, in the informal meeting of the European Council, convened by President António Costa, at Alden Biesen Castle in the Kingdom of Belgium.

The main topic of this meeting is to comprehensively debate, at the level of European leaders, how to generate more prosperity, well-being and quality services for citizens in the new global context, marked by deep transformations, the Presidential Administration sent in a statement.

According to the quoted source, the consolidation of the Single Market and the increase of the competitiveness of the European Union are the main solutions on the discussion table. From this perspective, the agenda will include topics such as strengthening European industry and building the strategic autonomy of the EU, reducing bureaucracy and national barriers, simplifying legislation, but also encouraging investments and innovations to develop European economies.

“In the preparation of this European Council, President Nicușor Dan requested points of view from institutions with responsibilities on European issues in order to formulate a coherent vision of Romania regarding the priorities for action at the EU level for the next period. In this sense, at the Presidential Administration, applied discussions took place this week with the Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, the Minister of Investments and European Projects, Dragoș Pîslaru, the Minister of Economy, Irineu Darău, and with representatives of the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Bank of Romania. Such meetings for the preparation of the European Councils on economic topics will from now on be of a permanent nature,” the statement added.

The cited source also states that, during the meeting on February 12, the President of Romania will promote the interests of our country in terms of economic development and competitiveness, which can only be fulfilled in a fully integrated and functional Single Market. That is why, during the discussions, President Nicușor Dan will plead for the consolidation of the Single Market, the attraction of investments and the use of new commercial opportunities resulting from the agreements recently signed by the European Union, which will open up new economic possibilities for our country.

At the same time, the President of Romania supports the need to simplify administrative procedures for businesses, which will facilitate the increase of investments and the expansion of Romanian companies on the European markets.

“Also, our country will promote integrated solutions to reduce strategic dependencies, by identifying international partnerships, especially in the field of critical raw materials”the statement also states.

Regarding energy, President Nicușor Dan believes that the solution to reduce costs for Romanian citizens and companies is the strengthening of the Energy Union, that is, a better interconnection of European energy networks.

The President will also request longer transition periods for the implementation of environmental policies, so that they are sustainable and do not negatively affect our economy.

With regard to the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034, the President of Romania supports a significant allocation aimed at increasing competitiveness, but he will also argue that geographical criteria must also be taken into account in order to reduce the existing economic gaps between European countries.
