Nicușor Dan: “Romania is safe, the MAE monitors Romanians from the Middle East”

President Nicușor Dan stated on Sunday that “Romania is completely safe and is not under any direct threat”, in the context of the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. The statement comes a day after the United States and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran, resulting in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“Even if the current regional security context in the Middle East has deteriorated significantly, our country is out of any danger. The institutions of the Romanian state responsible for foreign policy and security are monitoring the evolution of the situation and taking all the necessary measures in such circumstances”the head of state wrote on X.

Nicușor Dan emphasized that the absolute priority is the safety of Romanians in the affected areas. He told them to follow the instructions of the MFA and local authorities.

“Currently, the priority is the safety of Romanian citizens in the conflict zones. I am telling Romanian citizens and tourists in the area to remain calm, to follow the instructions and messages sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the local authorities of the states in which they are located. A crisis cell is operating at the MAE whose objective is to identify the safest and fastest options for the repatriation of those who have been stranded as a result of the closure of the airspace in the Eastern region Middle”, the president wrote.

The war in the Middle East entered its second day on Sunday. Following Ali Khamenei’s ouster, Tehran retaliated with attacks on US bases and launched barrages of missiles at Israel, where casualties were reported. Meanwhile, demonstrations in support of Iran are taking place in several countries in the region as tensions continue to escalate.
