The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, announced that he has received the invitation to participate in the first meeting of the Peace Council, which will take place in Washington on February 19, 2026. In a post published online, the head of state stated that Romania welcomes the efforts of the US Administration to promote peace at the international level.
After receiving the invitation, Romania started a consultation process with the American side to clarify to what extent certain provisions of the Peace Council Charter can be revised or interpreted so that they are fully compatible with the international obligations already assumed by the Romanian state, the president wrote on Facebook.
“The decision regarding Romania’s participation in the February 19 event will be taken following discussions with the American partners regarding the format of the meeting with countries like Romania, which are not currently members of the Council, but wish to join under the terms of the revision of the Charter”, transmitted Nicușor Dan.
Sources from the Presidential Administration confirmed on Saturday, February 7, that the invitation was sent to President Nicușor Dan. Today, February 8, the head of state confirmed receiving the invitation.
Previously, President Nicușor Dan had stated that he would like Romania to join the council, but there are aspects of international law that must be regulated before a decision is made.
The Peace Council was launched by Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The initiative was originally part of the US plan to end the war in the Gaza Strip, but its ambitions later expanded to global conflict resolution.
Although many countries have expressed reservations about this initiative, only a few, including France, Norway, Croatia and New Zealand, have explicitly refused Washington’s invitation.
