One of the nine babies who were waiting for a place to be released at ATI, at the Hospital “Mary Curie”died, informed doctor Cătălin Cîrstoveanu, head of the Intensive Care Unit, on Thursday. The tragedy comes in the context in which, on the same day, the Government approved a Memorandum to unlock hospital positions.
Ten children were waiting for a bed at ATI, the number of available places being limited by the lack of medical staff.
Doctor Cătălin Cîrstoveanu, head of the ATI department at the Children’s Hospital “Marie Curie”stated that one of the children who were waiting for a place to be released died.
“From one we found out that he died in the meantime. We couldn’t take him. When we have 22 patients, that’s when we’re at our maximum”he declared for Antena 3.
Asked what the chances are for children waiting for a place to be released, the doctor stated: “Obviously they don’t have a chance, obviously they don’t have a chance, because we’ve been stopping admissions here for weeks to get the five beds we don’t have nurses for.”
“It’s a mouthful of oxygen now before you die”
Cătălin Cîrstoveanu also stated that the situation cannot be solved overnight, due to several factors.
“It’s a breath of oxygen now, before you die, but the patient is critical, because, tomorrow, the situation is the same, the day after tomorrow will be the same. If a colleague goes on maternity leave, it’s over. If someone gets sick or if someone resigns, it’s over. We have to go to the Government to ensure the permanence of intensive care for our children.
The second thing is very important. Where do I get 8 nurses now, trained, for critical patients, operations, cardiac surgery, CRLT, mechanical ventilation? Maybe from outside the country, maybe those who left and who are outside the country and work there in special conditions”he told Euronews.
He also stated that “any nurse would beat a plasterer” because “a good plasterer earns 2,000 euros”.
Memorandum for unblocking positions
We remind you that the Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, announced that he approved the memorandum proposed by the Ministry of Health to unlock 22 positions at the Children’s Emergency Clinical Hospital “Marie Curie”.
The decision comes as the management of the medical unit has warned that staff shortages have led to the closure of five intensive care beds, affecting the hospital’s ability to treat serious cases.
Until recently, the ward had 27 beds, but the number was reduced to 22 after the departure of seven nurses. Two of these resigned, while others went on medical or parental leave.
