Senator Paul Stănescu received, on Friday, August 2, the support of the Olt PSD organization to run for a new mandate as secretary general of the Olt PSD. Stănescu will run for the PSD Congress in Marcel Ciolacu’s team, whom he would like to be the party’s presidential candidate.
The announcement regarding the support of Senator Paul Stănescu to run for the position of secretary general of the PSD, within the PSD Congress that will take place on August 24, was made by the president of the PSD Olt, Marius Oprescu, in a press conference organized in Slatina on the end of the Extraordinary County Conference of PSD Olt.
“QDuring this Extraordinary Conference, we decided to support Mr. Senator Paul Stănescu, in the position of Secretary General of the PSD. In PSD, in these elections, the vote will be one of motion, each candidate will come with the whole team and the vote will be given for the whole team, not for individuals. Mr. Paul Stănescu will run, alongside Marcel Ciolacu, as president, together with him, on this motion, for the leadership of the party, for the next four years”declared Oprescu.
“Mr. Ciolacu, from my point of view, should run”
Senator Paul Stănescu, for his part, recalled that at the PSD Congress on August 24, not only the new leadership team of the party will be established, but also the PSD candidate for the Presidential Elections. “The custom of the party, we know well, was, every time, to run for the president of the party”, Stanescu said. Marcel Ciolacu is the PSD member best placed in the polls, Stănescu mentioned, in addition, “has all the qualities”.

“Mr. Ciolacu, from my point of view, should run. This is my point of view and I have said it publicly that I will never agree to the candidacy of another person from outside the party, so we want a PSD member and Mr. Ciolacu has all the qualities to run for this position, but, sure, it’s up to you. Because, of course, the party wants you to run, but you have to want it too”, Stanescu said.
The general secretary of the PSD, who will run for Marcel Ciolacu’s team to be part of the PSD leadership forum for the next four years, also spoke about the qualities of the potential PSD candidate Marcel Ciolacu.
“Marcel Ciolacu (…) has many qualities, one of them – Marcel Ciolacu is a good man, a man with above average intelligence, and Marcel Ciolacu knows well what he has to do. When and how he will announce his candidacy for the Presidency of Romania…, I am convinced that he will do this. Of course, as he said, I’ve had many experiences like that when the party president ran and lost every time, but I hope he will run.” Stanescu added.
Asked with whom the PSD could make an alliance for the second round of the Presidential elections, Stănescu answered “we will see”. Stănescu, although he did not reject the possibility that the PSD majority would decide to support a candidate from outside the party, insisted that he would not support such an option.
The meeting between Marcel Ciolacu and Mircea Geaonă, “pure coincidence”
Stănescu also spoke about the topic that has been intensely debated in recent days, namely the meeting between Marcel Ciolacu, the PSD president who seems rather decided not to run, and Mircea Geoană, the former PSD president who, although he has not officially launched his candidacy, is in good weather electoral campaign, at the event organized by journalist Marius Tucă.
“It was pure coincidence. Marius Tucă invited them to his birthday, probably the fault of one or the other for not asking: but who else is coming to your birthday? But that’s not really a question, after all, if you invite me to your birthday, I don’t ask who else is coming, because if I want to come, I’ll come anyway, no matter who comes. Not? So I assure you, in the most sincere way, that it was just a coincidence. Now, who benefited from this incident remains to be seen. The public, of course, interprets all these things”, commented Paul Stănescu.
