Gabriel Zetea, PSD vice-president, said in a radio interview on Tuesday that the party could change its statute so that it could support a person who shares its left-wing views, stating that NATO's Deputy Secretary General, Mircea Geoană, should give a signal to the social democrats, if he wants to be supported in the presidential elections. According to the social democrat, the essential condition in this sense would be for Mircea Geoană to “pick up the phone, call the party president” Marcel Ciolacu.

“President Marcel Ciolacu, starting a year and a half ago, already made a public discussion, in which he said: we are willing to amend the party's Statute, so that we, PSD, can support a person who shares our leftist views, not necessarily because he is a PSD member. So we have this availability in PSD. But don't you think that person should still give a signal to the PSD that they want it in the first place?”, PSD vice-president Gabriel Zetea said to RFI.
Asked if registration in the PSD would also be a condition, Gabriel Zetea answered: “Not necessarily“.
The social-democratic vice-president then continued explaining that the main condition would be for Mircea Geoană to contact Marcel Ciolacu.
“The essential condition would be, as I see it, to pick up the phone, call the party president, set up a meeting with the party leadership, and then, in a much broader framework, with the rest of the PSD members and to- and express this desire before us”, said PSD vice-president, when asked if the basic condition for Mircea Geoană to be able to run for PSD would be that he be a member of PSD.
The Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Mircea Geoană, recently stated in a televised interview that “the year 2024 will be the year of the independents”, adding that he would not reject the widest possible civic and political support in the case of a candidacy for the presidential elections , if his vision of the country is respected.
NATO's Deputy Secretary General also stated that he does not wish to contribute to what he calls “a political game of a small group of political leaders from Romania“, who just want to “rearrange some chairs“.
“Where I'm not interested is in a contribute in one form or another to a political game of a small group of political leaders in Romania, who actually try to continue the current regime under the guise nine in the coming years. I believe that the presidential elections, whenever they are organized, must lead to a real, profound change. Romania needs a new beginning, it needs a change more than the rearrangement of seats between some current leaders, and I am absolutely convinced that Romanians will vote massively for this in the elections this fallMircea Geoană also said.
The statement came after the leader of the PSD, Marcel Ciolacu, who was previously asked about the statements made over time, that it is impossible for a man from outside the party to run for the PSD in the presidential elections, said:Mr. Geoană is not from outside the party, he was the PSD president, I think the longest-serving PSD president until me.”
