The Social Democratic Party will have a candidate for the position of president of Romania, according to a decision taken in a statutory forum of the party, and will win the presidential elections, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Saturday.
PSD will have its own presidential candidate
The Head of the Executive made the clarification, on Saturday, at the end of the visit to the Aeronautical Staff Training and Training Air Base “Aurel Vlaicu”from Boboc, where the Boboc Air Show – BOBAS 2024 air show takes place.
“I told you yesterday, if you want I will tell you today and tomorrow. We decided in a statutory forum, yesterday, very clearly – the Social Democratic Party will have a candidate for the position of president. There is no if…I am firmly convinced that the PSD will win the presidential elections, and the best chance will be given to us, the Romanians, when you will report on the 20 years of right-wing presidents“, said Marcel Ciolacu.
Asked if it can be said that the campaign for the presidential elections in Buzău has started, Ciolacu said: “Not. We can say that it is one of my dearest places because this is where I grew up. I grew up on this airfield”.
“It is a day of celebration in fact and right, full of emotions. Normal for me, because here, about 100 meters behind, I grew up. I'm glad that I met a lot of my father's colleagues who told me about the pranks I used to do when I was at the airfield”Ciolacu added.
The Prime Minister assured that the government, in the current formula, will work even if PSD and PNL will have their own candidate in the presidential elections.
“My concern is not the functioning of a government coalition, my concern that I also had in the past elections, now, was how the Government of Romania functions. And it worked flawlessly. And it's not the first time I thanked them and I thank my colleagues from both parties for the political maturity they showed”Ciolacu also declared.
The prime minister categorically rejected the option that the current government should break up.
“No, there is not the slightest risk. Romania needs stability. And it is a very clear discussion at the moment when the PSD accepted, in a very complicated moment for Romania, to come to the government. And I think we are two political people who respect each other, both me and Mr. Nicolae Ciucă“, the PSD president pointed out.
In this context, he was also asked about the fact that George Simion will be the AUR candidate for the country's Presidency. “Very good, congratulations! I wish him success!“, Ciolacu said.
