Psychologist Mihai Copăceanu, addiction specialist and doctor of medicine, warns that teenagers are exposed to numerous risks at music festivals and believes that minors should not participate in such events.
In an interview given to News.ro, the specialist claims that society and parents have begun to normalize dangerous behaviors, given that teenagers are exposed to alcohol and drug use, as well as other risky situations.
“It is a mistake and irresponsibility to allow minors to participate in festivals”says psychologist Mihai Copăceanu.
The psychologist says that teenagers are tempted to take risks, especially in groups, and festivals can become the place for the first dangerous experiences.
“Festivals are favorable occasions for the first contact with the abuse of tobacco, alcohol and drugs, the first unprotected sexual act, sexual aggression, etc. The first drunkenness will be at the festival”he warns.
Young people do not have enough alternatives
Mihai Copăceanu believes that young people are not a priority either at the national or local level.
There are too few programs, services and activities dedicated to teenagers, and many communities do not have youth centers or volunteer networks that involve them constantly, the psychologist believes.
The specialist also draws attention to the excessive time spent in front of screens during the holidays, a phenomenon that favors sleep disorders and can affect the mental health of adolescents.
Outdoor activities, recommended instead of festivals
As healthier alternatives for spending free time, the psychologist recommends activities in nature, walks, vacations with grandparents, interaction with animals and involvement in volunteer projects.
In his opinion, participation in festivals should be postponed until adulthood.
“That’s why I recommend postponing these festival participations until after 18. We don’t experiment with children,” declared Mihai Copăceanu.
