Radu Burnete, advisor to President Nicușor Dan, reacted on Facebook in the context of the consecration of the painting of the National Cathedral, criticizing the idea that it would be “the one” big project carried out by Romania in recent years. Burnete points out, in a detailed analysis, that our country has spent between 130 and 150 billion euros on public investments since 2010 — the equivalent of 400-500 cathedrals.

“Romania has spent between 130 and 150 billion euros on public investments since 2010. About 400-500 cathedrals”writes Burnete. He points out that, “despite corruption and inefficiencies, Romania has progressed”investing in public infrastructure “how many hundreds of cathedrals, only not everyone benefited equally”.
The advisor claims that the construction of the Cathedral is not the reason why Romania lacks hospitals or highways. “As expensive as it is, it’s a tiny amount of public money. If we managed it better and had less corruption, we’d have more and better of everything.”
“It wasn’t the building of this cathedral that made us have less,” adds Burnete, pointing out that the real problems are “bureaucracy, government instability and mismanagement of funds”.
Finally, he describes the Cathedral of the Salvation of the Nation as “a mirror of society”: “It reflects the way we understand state, church, faith and administration. Not all aspects are beautiful, but not all are bad. Different eyes see different things.”
“Our country has undeniable progress, but also enough problems to keep two more generations busy. Now a great cathedral”Burnete concluded.
