It's official! Starting next school year, students will receive traffic education lessons. The Ministry of Education together with the Ministry of the Interior launched three guides for primary, secondary and high school education. They contain basic rules, theoretical notions, applications, but also worksheets.
The announcement was complemented by a statement from Minister Ligia Deca. “We have published on the website of the Ministry of Education three road education guides, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. They are important road safety resources and I recommend everyone involved in activities with children to use them! For safety we need education. There are guidelines also aimed at preventive conduct. They are adapted to the age of the children who receive the information“. The official believes that road education is an important and current topic. That is why the lessons will be included in the mandatory topics that the new curriculum must include. “Practically, the curricular reform that is underway for high school will take this necessity into account,” argued Deca at the “Road Safety Forum”, which took place on Monday, at the Senate. “These documents contain theoretical notions, but also examples of how to apply the road legislation in force. They also include statistics, and worksheets, and apps designed to encourage young people to become more responsible,” added the minister.
What information do the guides contain?
Primary school students will learn about traffic rules and the reasons why we must respect them, but also about the rights and obligations of pedestrians. Lessons include worksheets, activities and interactive games. Children will learn to decipher the directions of police officers at the intersection and will know the rules they must follow as passengers in a means of transport.
Secondary school students will also learn traffic laws, how to drive safely from home to school, how to cross the street, and what road signs mean.
High school students will be introduced to traffic laws, first aid, they will learn the risks they are exposed to if they cross the street while looking at the mobile phone screen. Also, the traffic education guide explains the traffic rules that must be followed when riding an electric scooter, bicycle, etc.
“Regardless of our status as a pedestrian, passenger or vehicle driver, we all have the duty to know the rules of the road and to respect other road users. Under these conditions, it is natural to ensure that young people and children in our society benefit from the necessary support to become responsible pedestrians, passengers or drivers, who know and respect the traffic rules”, the Ministry of Education sent in a statement.
More than 1,500 children died last year in accidents on Romanian roads, and 3,500 were seriously injured. The culprits are, most often, pedestrians who cross through unauthorized places. 263 children died in such conditions.
