Robbie Williams has revealed that he was recently diagnosed with a form of autism spectrum disorder. The 52-year-old British artist spoke about his new diagnosis and the struggles he’s faced over the years at an event to launch his new clothing collection.
The singer is known for being candid about his mental health. Robbie Williams said the diagnosis brought him some relief and helped him better understand certain behaviors and how his own mind works.
“I have ADHD and I just found out I have a little bit of autism too, which I love because it explains so much. It’s my free escape ticket now.” joked Robbie Williams, according to Click!.
The artist explained that he uses his creativity and humor to distract himself from the intrusive thoughts and anxious scenarios his mind generates. He also recounted an episode on a plane when he wondered if his own thoughts could cause the aircraft to crash, thus describing the level of anxiety he experienced.
Williams also joked that the new diagnosis gives him an explanation for behaviors that others might find unusual. At the same time, he admitted that ADHD allows him to focus extremely intensely on one thing while making it difficult for him to attend to other tasks.
“For all the weird things I do, I just say: Sorry, I’m autistic! With ADHD you can focus 1000% on one thing, but absolutely everything else you’re completely incapable of, ask my kids.” he said in an interview.

The new diagnosis comes after a long period in which Robbie Williams has spoken publicly about his mental health issues, alcohol and drug addiction, as well as ADHD and Tourette syndrome.
The artist has said in the past that he went through several periods of addiction and that he underwent treatments to control his substance use. Williams also said she lives with a form of Tourette syndrome that manifests itself in inner thoughts and impulses rather than visible tics.
The singer explained that he has struggled for years with intrusive thoughts and a mind that is difficult for him to “stop”. To cope with these moods, he tries to channel his energy into creative pursuits, such as drawing and humor.
Robbie Williams is also a father of four and has repeatedly spoken about his concerns about the impact of technology and social media on the little ones. The artist considers phones and the Internet highly addictive and says he tries to limit his children’s access to them as much as possible.
Williams argues that if it can be difficult for an adult to manage the effects of the internet, how much more should children be protected from excessive use of phones and social media.
