Timișoara will benefit from a modern oncology hospital, after the funding for the construction of the Regional Oncology Institute (IROT) was moved from the PNRR to the Health Operational Program. This change will extend the deadline for the completion of the unit, from 2026 to 2028, the Minister of Health, Alexandru Rogobete, announced on Saturday.
“Today, the last technical details took place for the effective transfer of the financing of the Regional Institute of Oncology from Timisoara (IROT) from PNRR to the new financing program, the Health operational program, also non-reimbursable European funds, the partnership agreement through which the Ministry of Health together with the County Council and the implementation unit represented by the National Investment Company will continue the second phase of the project”, said Rogobete, in a press conference in Timișoara.
The minister explained that, until now, with funding from the PNRR, the demolition of the existing building on the land where the new hospital will be built and the design for the medical unit were carried out.
“This project benefited from two sources of funding. Through the PNRR, the demolition and design were financed, and through the Health Operational Program, the second phase, the actual construction and the provision of medical equipment will be financed. Another advantage of the transfer to another source of financing is that the implementation deadline moves from 2026 to 2028. Practically until the end of 2028, the Regional Institute of Oncology from Timişoara, the only oncology institute in this region, will have to be put into use”, Rogobete also said.
The Regional Institute of Oncology in Timișoara will serve the entire western region of the country and will have 250 beds for day and outpatient hospitalization. The unit will include:
- diagnostic services (laboratory analyses, imaging, endoscopy, functional explorations),
- operating room and intensive care,
- radiotherapy and nuclear medicine laboratory,
- center for bone marrow transplantation and stem cell apheresis.
The hospital will also have a dedicated oncology emergency center and study and research spaces, including multi-purpose rooms, practical presentation rooms and study offices.
Minister Alexandru Rogobete emphasized that the Regional Institute of Oncology represents a strategic project for western Romania, ensuring patients’ access to complex and state-of-the-art treatments, as well as the necessary framework for research and professional training in the oncology field.
