Romanian students won two gold and three silver medals at the International Physics Olympiad, which took place in Colombia, the Ministry of Education and Research informed on Sunday.

According to the Ministry of Education, the gold medals were obtained by Vlad Bolohan and Andrei Vila, both from the International Theoretical High School of Informatics in Bucharest.

The silver medals went to Rareș Muntean, from Liceul Teoretic “Jebelean John” from Sânnicolau Mare, Alexandru Jicu, student of the National College “Gheorghe Vrănceanu” from Bacău, and Alexandru Condrea, from the International Theoretical High School of Informatics from Bucharest.

The Romanian team was led by university lecturer Dr. Sebastian Popescu from the University “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” from Iași and by Professor Dr. Gabriel Florian from the National College “Charles I” from Craiova.

The 56th edition of the International Physics Olympiad was held from July 4 to 12, 2026, in Bucaramanga, Colombia, with the participation of 381 competitors from 90 countries.

At the level of the Ministry of Education and Research, the coordination of the Olympics was ensured by the Department of Olympics, Competitions, Partnerships and Extracurricular Education, through Prof. Elisabeta Ana Nagy, MEC inspector.
