The Romanian team was defeated by the United States with a score of 10-7 (2-1, 2-2, 2-2, 4-2), on Tuesday, in Group C of Division 1 of the Men’s Water Polo World Cup, in Otopeni.
The game was balanced for a short time, 3-3 and 4-4, otherwise the Americans, bronze medalists at the Paris Olympics, controlled the dispute.
The tricolors’ goals were scored by Levente Vancsik (2), Francesco Iudean, Matei Luţescu, Andrei Prioteasa, Silvian Colodrovschi and Vlad Georgescu.
Ryan Ohl (3 goals), Jake Ehrhardt (2), Max Irving (2), Marko Vavic, Nicolas Saveljic, Chase Dodd scored for the winners. Alexander Oprea, a winger of Romanian origin, also played for the Americans.
In other matches played on Tuesday, Hungary defeated France 15-10 in Group A, Greece beat Montenegro 18-10 in Group B, and Croatia beat Georgia 13-11 in Group D.
On Wednesday, the games scheduled are Greece – Serbia (09:00), Serbia – Montenegro (18:30), both in Group B, France – Spain (17:00), in Group A, and Romania – Japan (20:00), in Group C.
Serbia (Group B) is the Olympic champion en titre, Croatia is the Olympic vice-champion, the United States team won the bronze in Paris, Spain is the European champion, but also the holder of the trophy in the World Cup.
The first six ranked in Division 1 will qualify for the Super Final, along with the two best teams in Division II.
