According to the doctor Ileana Stamate, although we have the most medicine graduates in Europe, in terms of the number of doctors in thousands of inhabitants, we are in the queue of the standings, because many of them choose to practice in other countries.

Doctor Ileana Stamate, spokesman for the patronage of doctors with independent practice in Romania, said on Wednesday, in an intervention on Medika TV, that the large number of doctors who request professional certificates that allow them to practice outside Romania and that we are a country of paradoxes is worrying.
While statistics indicate that we have the largest number of medicine graduates, as a number of doctors in thousands of inhabitants we are in the queue of the European standings. According to the College of Physicians, 1,250 medical staff requested such certificates, the figure being comparable to the one before the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The figure mentioned by the representatives of the College of Physicians is extremely worrying. Romania is practically a country of the paradox. We are the country in Europe that produce the largest number of medicine graduates, 26 graduates of medicine percent of thousands, in 2021 this statistic was valid, well above the average of the European Union, which was 17 doctors percent of thousands of inhabitants. However, we are at the bottom of the ranking in terms of the number of doctors per thousand inhabitants in Romania: only 3.5 doctors have, at present, compared to the average of the European Union which is 4.5 ”, explained Dr. Ileana Stamate.
Reasons that make doctors under the age of 35
Also a study prepared by the College of Physicians in Romania in 2023 indicated a high degree of Burn Out, 36%, but also a high intention on migration, the study showing that over 50% of doctors intended to leave the country.
“Doctors under 35 have reported as main reasons to leave the deficient infrastructure, as well as the reduced opportunities for professional advancement. For doctors between 36 and 49, the system infrastructure had a proportion of 18%, the desire or possibilities to practice around 18-20%, instead defending a new factor, namely care, fears for the family, for the future of children. In the doctors over 50 years, the same reason for deficient infrastructure and professional fears and the impossibility to advance professionally, but, in addition, an 18% percentage of the lack of professional recognition, lack of defense, so to speak, of the protection of the state towards the doctors appeared. It is very important for all authorities to take these data in order to rethink the medical system, to increase the retention of doctors ”, explained the doctor Ileana Stamate.
Another reason invoked by young doctors who want to leave Romania is the weak regulation of the notion of malpraxis.
“At this moment, over 80% of doctors believe that, practically, malpractice insurances do not have such efficiency in accordance with what we want as doctors,” He also explained the spokesman for the patronage of doctors with independent practice in Romania.
