Romanian fans, “defeated” by the Gay Parade, but not by the storm, in Munich

Mail from Munich

The victory in the debut match at Euro 2024, 3-0 against Ukraine, made the fans of Romania aim well with the thought of the round of 16 of the competition. The match with Belgium aroused enormous interest not only in Koln, where the tricolors faced Belgium, but also in other important cities in Germany.

A part of Romania’s gallery, which had scheduled a performance in Marienplatz, the main square in Munich, followed by watching the second group match in the Fan Zone set up by the hosts at Olympiaplatz, had a lot to do. First of all, because yesterday an LGBT demonstration was scheduled in the capital of Bavaria, right in the meeting place of the Romanian supporters.

Munich Gay Pride, for which the organizers installed a huge stage on which artists approved by this movement performed, blocked Marienplaz and gathered several thousand people from all over Europe. “And we have rights, not only football fans”, a few attendees dressed in odd-to-the-common-man outfits called out to us.

In the end, they too were driven from the square by the storm that hit Munich in the evening, so that the bars and shops in the area and especially the station on three levels below the square were filled to the brim with representatives of the LGBT movement, equipped with flags or clothing in the colors of the rainbow.

If they couldn’t take place in Marienplatz, the national team’s supporters stormed the Fan Zone, the complex next to Munich’s Olympia Stadium, where supporters have set up two places to watch Euro 2024 matches, plus numerous places where they can take part competitions and other football related activities. However, they had to face the torrential rain that fell over the city starting at 17.00 and which lasted even after the end of the torment of the tricolors in the confrontation with Belgium.

Rain and temperatures of 12 degrees in Munich

But the main viewing area for the matches, which sits on an arena with dirt and grass stands, was closed, so many turned back to their homes or hotels, and others crammed in and filled to capacity. the only covered area in the complex. Soaked by the rain, sitting on the tables – there was a flood on the floor – they sang the national anthem with their hands on their chests, shouted for Romania without ceasing, even after the kick received after a few tens of seconds of the game, at the goal of the Belgian Tielemans.

They took turns at the beer kiosk, although the way was through the rain, because anyway they were already soaked to the skin, but they stayed with the tricolors until the end. This even if the thermometers showed only 12 degrees at the end of the game, it was still raining heavily, and all those selling at the food and drink kiosks had already taken their shoes home since the break.

Even so, the fans of the national team, who have won all the Euro battles so far, have not disarmed. On Wednesday, for the decisive match against Slovakia, they met again in the Marienplatz, then in the Fan Zone in Munich, hoping that their overflowing energy will give the tricolors some power in the big battle in Frankfurt.
