Romanians can benefit from free medical tests, settled by CNAS

Romanians insured in the health system can perform annual, free of charge, analyzes such as blood count and blood glucose, settled by the National Health Insurance Fund (CNAS).

The services are available on the basis of a referral ticket issued by the family doctor or a specialist doctor under contract with CNAS, according to Digi24.

Conditions to benefit from free analyses

To access settled medical services, patients must meet three conditions:

  1. To be insured in the national health system and to contribute to the CNAS fund.
  2. To obtain a referral from the family doctor or a specialist who collaborates with the Health Insurance House.
  3. To choose a medical unit that has a contract with the Insurance House.

The referral ticket is issued in three copies: one remains with the doctor, and the other two are used by the patient to access the analysis services. One copy is kept by the clinic where the investigations are carried out, and the other is submitted to the Insurance Company.

Who benefits from free services?

In addition to those who contribute to the health fund (employees, freelancers or people who pay the insurance on their own initiative), there are special categories of people who can access free services, even if they do not contribute:

  • Children under 18, pupils and students without income between 18 and 26;
  • Pregnant women and women with no income or with income below the gross minimum wage for the economy;
  • People on medical leave, pregnancy and maternity leave or child care up to the age of 7;
  • Persons completing military service within the term;
  • Pensioners with incomes lower than 740 lei;
  • The unemployed and those on welfare benefits.

What analyzes are settled?

CNAS covers a wide range of medical services, including:

  1. Laboratory analyses: hemogram, blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, tests for infections (HIV, ASLO), Babeș-Papanicolau exam, urine culture and many others.
  2. Microbiology and immunology: tests for nasal, urethral or vaginal secretions, immunological determinations such as IgA, IgE, serum IgG, etc.
  3. Imaging: X-rays (cranial, spine, limbs or digestive tract), non-radiative investigations (general ultrasounds, transfontanellar ultrasounds), CTs (skull, chest) and others.

The complete list of settled analyzes can be consulted at medical service providers or on the official CNAS platforms.

How does the process work?

The referral ticket provided by the doctor is valid for 30 days from the moment of issue. If the investigations cannot be carried out immediately, the medical center is obliged to schedule the patient within this interval. Otherwise, the patient can request the return of the ticket to attend another clinic.

In some cases, uninsured people or those with low incomes can benefit from free analyzes through government programs or on the recommendation of public health institutions.
