Gabriela Ruse (26 years old) ended her admirable run at the US Open 2024 with a spectacular match. Coming from the qualifications, the Romanian was one step away from providing the second colossal surprise on the main draw, after, in the previous round, she passed the title champion from Wimbledon, Barbora Krejcikova (8 WTA).

Arriving in front of Paula Badosa (Spain, 26 years old, 29 WTA), the Romanian played bravely and was rewarded after a first set won 6-4. In the second act, however, the Iberian clearly dominated and won without emotions: 6-1.
The decisive was on the edge of the knife! The tie was maintained after the first eight games in which each athlete made a break. Then, at 5-4 for Ruse, on the opponent’s serve, Gabriela had break point and match point! However, Badosa canceled it, served and restored the tie: 5-5. The next two games were decided on each player’s serve, so at 6-6 it was a tie-break.
Here, Badosa started excellently, 4-0. Even if Ruse came close at one point, at 3-4, the lead taken by the player from Spain proved to be decisive. Badosa won the tie-break 10-8 and qualified for the round of 16 after 2 hours and 35 minutes: 4-6, 6-1, 7-6.
Gabriela Ruse left the singles event with her head held high, with three wins in the qualifiers and two more in the main draw. Reaching the third round at the US Open is her best result at a Grand Slam. And the player from Romania will be rewarded according to her performance: she occupies the 97th place in the live hierarchy, updated in real time, in the conditions in which she arrived in New York, ranked 122nd in the WTA.
Additionally, Ruse has collected $231,202 for her US Open results so far. And this amount can increase, given that Gabriela remains in the doubles event, alongside the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk. The two will face the pair formed by Siniakova / Townsend, in the second round, the match to take place on Saturday.
325,000
of dollars received Paula Badosa to qualify for the round of 16 of the US Open, where she will play either Azarenka (20 WTA) or Wang (80 WTA).
