On Thursday, October 24, Daniel David, the Minister of Education and Research, said that scholarships for students and Olympians could be reintroduced, under the conditions that it will be possible for part of the funding to be secured from European funds.

We remind you that these scholarships were eliminated following the austerity measures adopted by the Government in the summer of this year.

“For me, in the very short term, from the first part of next year, the following things are a priority: student scholarships and Olympic scholarships. Here, practically, the state budget will also have to be supplemented with European funds. And we started the approach together with the specialized ministry, we are in discussions with the European Commission”, explained Daniel David in an intervention broadcast live on the ministry’s Facebook page, where he presented a report of the ministry’s activity and the main directions for the next period.

The minister also spoke about other short-term priorities, including payment by the hour in pre-university education and the unblocking of budget positions, other sensitive topics, which created dissatisfaction among teachers.

“We need to look at hourly pay in pre-university and, very importantly, once we have taken the steps that needed to be taken, unlock the budgeted positions, both in the pre-university area and in the university area. I think these are the short-term things.” he also said.

As far as medium-term projects are concerned, the Minister of Education says that he is primarily considering adjustments to the Law on Unitary Wages.

“We had to demand that the commitment made to Education, namely the average gross salary in the economy as a starting point for the entry-level teacher and the assistant to be seen there, and then think about the other developments”, explained Daniel David.

As a long-term objective, the minister specified that there are discussions with the leaders of the coalition for the assumption of a pact for a decade of Education and research, which would include the annual increase of the budget, the coordination between the structures of education and research, as well as the alignment of the reforms with the good practices of the European Union and the OECD.

“Sure sometimes you might deviate from some of these practices, but then you have to come out publicly and say why you did it,” Daniel David also said.
