About Scorpions: A 60 -year -old inheritance in hard rock and global influence
Formed in 1965 in Hannover, Germany, by guitarist Rudolf Schenker, the Scorpions band has evolved from Merseybeat influences to one of the most emblematic hard rock and heavy metal bands. The joining of Klaus Meine as a vocal soloist and the younger brother of Rudolf, Michael Schenker, on the solo guitar, in 1970, defined the early identity of the band. The debut album, Lonesome Crow (1972), marked the beginning of a legendary career.
After Michael Schenker’s departure to the UFO band, Scorpions
He merged with the members of the Dawn Road band, including guitarist Uli Jon Roth and bassist Francis Buchholz. Although most of the members came from Dawn Road, the band retained the name Scorpions due to notoriety. This formula launched Fly to the Rainbow (1974), followed by in Trance (1975), the beginning of the collaboration with the producer Dieter Dierks and the development of a stronger and distinct sound.
The end of the 1970s brought notable albums like Virgin Killer (1976) and Taken Byce (1977), which increased the band’s popularity, although they also generated controversies due to bold covers. After Roth’s departure, Matthias Jabs joined the band, and Lovedrive (1979) strengthened the success formula Scorpions – Hard rock parts combined with melodic ballads.
The 1980s represented the commercial peak of the band. Albums such as Animal Magnetism (1980), Blackout (1982) and Love at First Sting (1984) – with hits like “Rock You Like a Hurricane” and “Still Loving You” – propelled Scorpions in the international charts. The Live World Wide Live album (1985) captured the energy of their live shows. The band also became a cultural symbol, holding emblematic concerts, including at the Moscow Music Peace Festival in 1989, winning many fans beyond the iron curtain.
In 1990, Crazy World included the famous song “Wind of Change”, inspired by the fall of the Berlin Wall, turning Scorpions into witnesses and messengers of global change. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the band explored new directions-such as Eye II Eye (1999) or symphonic collaboration of Moment of Glory (2000)-but remained faithful to fans through strong albums (2004) and Humanity: Hour I (2007).
Although they had announced a farewell tour with Sting in the Tail (2010), Scorpions continued to perform and record, launching return to forever (2015) and Rock Believer (2022).
Recognized as one of the best -selling rock bands of all time – with over 100 million discs sold – Scorpions have influenced generations of artists, from Metallica to Guns N ‘Roses. With distinctions like a star on Hollywood Rockwalk and the introduction to Hall of Heavy Metal History, Scorpions
Real ambassadors of world rock remain.
