In Romania, parties must obtain a percentage of at least 5% at the national level or at least 20% of the votes in four constituencies to cross the electoral threshold and win a seat in one of the Parliament’s chambers.

The representation norm for the elections to the Chamber of Deputies is one deputy per 73,000 inhabitants, while the representation norm for future members of the Senate is one senator per 168,000 inhabitants.

So, there are three known, pro-European parties that have not crossed this threshold.

SENSE

The first is SENS (Health Education Nature Sustainability). The most well-known members are Nicu Ștefănuță, vice-president in the European Parliament and Ana Ciceală, former USR member, who ran in the local elections for the mayor of Sector 3 in June this year.

The SENS party promised to finance the construction of social housing for vulnerable people, paid therapy, modernization of public transport, laws to strengthen the rights of women, LGBTQ people. They also propose projects for green spaces, combating climate change, green energy etc.

However, they managed to collect 2.84% of votes (259,614 voters), so they did not pass the necessary threshold.

landmark

One and a half percent away is the REPER (Renew the European Project of Romania) party, which includes, among others, former MEPs Ramona Strugariu and Dragoș Pîslaru. The party is progressive and social-liberal and they propose the green and digital transition, investments for the next generations by moving public spending, but also the administrative-territorial and institutional reorganization of the state, to combat social inequities.

However, REPER only got 1.36% of the vote (124,676 voters), placing 11th among the parties by the number of votes.

JUSTICE

Under REPER is DREPT (Rights and Respect in Europe for All), whose best-known member is former MEP Vlad Gheorghe, who did not get the necessary votes even in the summer, in the European Parliament elections, when he ran as an independent.

DREPT is recommended to be a party of the center, and I propose the modernization of the educational system, of justice (through digitization and de-bureaucratization), the promotion of free access to contraception, the democratization of citizen initiative, etc.

This party also did not obtain the percentage of votes necessary to cross the electoral threshold, as they managed to gather only 1.23% of the votes (124,676 voters).
