With the discussion of banning TikTok in the United States, users are looking for alternatives to be able to enjoy a similar experience to that of the Chinese app.

So, according to the publication Engadget, the solution would also be an application created in China, called “RedNote”. The application has already caused a stir, being number one in the list of applications on the Apple Store, and number 34 in the Google virtual store.

TikTok users have already started promoting the Chinese app as an alternative, and the creators of “RedNote” in turn call those who migrate “TikTok refugees”.

Although it is less known in the West, RedNote competes in China with TikTok and the giant Alibaba, in the context of which it enjoys 300 million users.

ByteDance, the company that created TikTok, also made the Lemon8 app available, which is in high demand on mobile virtual stores. However, being ByteDance, Lemon8 could suffer the same fate as TikTok, which is to be banned by the Supreme Court.

TikTok has a few days left to sell its businesses to the US

The US Congress passed, in April 2024, a law by which TikTok will be banned in the US if it does not sell its businesses by January 19. However, Donald Trump has asked to delay the decision until he returns to office after January 20 to find a “political solution” to the problem.

TikTok has also had problems with other institutions, in the context of which the European Commission (EC) opened an investigation on December 17 to analyze the alleged violation of the Digital Services Act (DSA).

We must protect our democracies from any kind of foreign interference. Whenever we suspect such interference, especially during elections, we must act swiftly and firmly. Following serious indications that foreign actors interfered in Romania’s presidential election through the use of TikTok, we are now fully investigating whether TikTok breached the Digital Services Act by failing to address such risks. It should be very clear that in the EU, all online platforms, including TikTok, must be held accountable“, said the head of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen.
