Ursula Von der Leyen, who learned on Wednesday that she lost the trial regarding the transparency of vaccination contracts before the EU court, will not be replaced as head of the European Commission, the vote aimed at her in this position, practically a reconfirmation, to be given on Thursday.
The Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan, who is also vice-president of the European People’s Party, refutes any scenario that appeared on the news channels on Wednesday and claims that Ursula von der Leyen will be voted in on Thursday with a large majority.
“As vice-president of the European People’s Party and vice-president of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, I tell you that Ursula von der Leyen has the full support of our political family for the investiture vote that will take place tomorrow in the Plenary of the European Parliament. Ursula von der Leyen will be voted president of the European Commission tomorrow with the votes of all pro-European forces. Under the leadership of the European People’s Party, together with the Renew Group and the Group of European Socialists, we formed a pro-European coalition in the European Parliament. We have 401 of the 720 MEPs”the Romanian MEP mentioned on Facebook
“
Mureșan claims that, in addition to the mentioned groups, he expects additional votes from the pro-European group of the Greens, and from some pro-Europeans from the Conservative Group.
“As vice-president of the European People’s Party, I refute any scenario, including the scenarios that appeared today in the public space in Romania according to which there would have been crisis meetings within the European People’s Party and possible replacements for Ursula von der Leyen would have been discussed. There was no crisis meeting within the European People’s Party. There was no talk of a replacement. Ursula von der Leyen is our candidate for the position of President of the European Commission and she will receive our support and our vote in the plenary of the European Parliament tomorrow.
A day before the vote, it is all the more important not to give credence to disinformation, fake news and propaganda, not to give satisfaction to Vladimir Putin in Moscow or Vladimir Putin’s friends, those isolated, marginalized, minority Eurosceptics in the European Parliament who – would be happy if the European Union were destabilized. There is no question of destabilizing the European Union. Tomorrow we will vote for the president of the European Commission and we will get down to business immediately”Siegfried Muresan also transmitted.
The scenarios that appeared in the press included the president of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, as a replacement for Ursula von der Layen.
The European Commission did not offer the public “sufficiently wide access” to contracts on Covid-19 vaccines, an EU court ruled on Wednesday – a day before the decisive vote for Ursula von der Leyen.
The European Court ruled that the Commission’s decision to draft sections of the contracts contained “IRREGULARITIES“. It found that the Commission had not demonstrated that wider access to contracts would undermine the commercial interests of pharmaceutical companies.
The long-awaited ruling comes as von der Leyen prepares to give a speech on Thursday to reassure lawmakers, particularly those who have little faith in her, that she can lead Europe’s executive body for another term.
Von der Leyen needs the support of 361 MPs to be reconfirmed as president. Currently, the margins seem tight.
The three centrist groups that von der Leyen relied on in 2019 – her own European People’s Party, the Socialists and Democrats and Renew – could technically give her a majority, but only if all those MEPs vote for her in secret ballot.
