Sociologist Gelu Duminică, about the “Last Supper” from the OJ: “Freedom of artistic expression is sovereign”. The BOR reaction

Last Supper” reinterpreted, from the opening of the 2024 Olympic Games, is the latest topic to divide the Internet in two. While BOR criticizes the controversial scene, sociologist Gelu Duminică claims that “freedom of artistic expression is sovereign”.

Sociologist Gelu Duminică states that the artistic interpretation of the “Last Supper” at the Olympic Games in Paris is just one of many such interpretations.

To be fair: last night, at the Olympics, Leonardo da Vinci’s representation of the biblical moment “The Last Supper”, by no means the last supper of the Son with the apostles, was reinterpreted. The Last Supper had dozens of interpretations made by dozens of artists, but they are all just interpretations. I can understand those who felt hurt. I understand and accept that some of their symbols have been questioned. However, freedom of artistic expression is sovereign. If we were “Charlie” we must also agree when the principle of freedom of artistic expression questions our symbols. Of course, otherwise we are perverting the principle.“, Gelu wrote on Facebook on Sunday, related to the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games.

“We cannot watch this grotesque spectacle”

After Vasile Bănescu, the former spokesman of the Romanian Patriarchate, vehemently criticized the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games, it was Adrian Agachi’s turn to comment on the reinterpretation of the “Last Supper starring transvestites.

These manifestations that make fun of important moments in the life of the Savior Jesus Christ and of the Church in general because, in fact, the Last Supper is also the first celebration of communion with the Holy Mysteries, of the Holy Eucharist, are, in reality, the consequence direct influence of a demonic nature. We cannot look at this grotesque spectacle without thinking about the passionate, impure and deeply sinful aspect of a fallen human mind, which wants to overthrow the divine laws by giving a blasphemous interpretation to some holy acts of Christianity.“, wrote Adrian Agachi on Facebook.

Adrian Agachi suggests that there is an obvious tendency to promote manifestations of woke ideology globally.

“There is already a certain desire to impose such manifestations on a global level, even in events that are not related to religion or personal life, but which, by their scale, can serve to advertise the woke ideology.“, added the BOR representative.

The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games caused strong controversy with the reinterpretation of the “Last Supper” with DJ Barbara Butch in the place of Jesus Christ and participants from “Drag Race France” in the roles of the apostles. Criticism came both from MEP Claudiu Târziu, who denounced blasphemy and the influence of neo-Marxist ideology, and from French conservatives such as Marion Maréchal. On social networks, users vehemently condemned the scene, considering it a mockery of Christianity.

While others say it’s about “a Greek celebration and recognition of their gods. It has nothing to do with Christianity or the Last Supper.”

“Romania is in the middle of the Middle Ages”

Writer Igor Bergler points out that he noticed a frequent type of comments on posts critical of BOR and Christianity, suggesting that such views would be punished in Muslim countries.

Most recently, he kept appearing in the posts about the opening of the Paris Olympics. (…) He sounds something like this, formulated sometimes more, sometimes less agrammatically: “If you were in a Muslim country, you wouldn’t have had the courage to you post stuff like this. That they were executing you. That’s how we Christians are tolerant, unfortunately”. The subtext is as follows: “What a pity that we are not Muslims. That way at least someone would have been found to wipe you off the face of the earth. I can’t do that, but I wouldn’t mind at all if someone took care of you!”. Romania it’s in the middle ages early and an extremely violent country. You don’t even realize how violent and intolerant she is!“, the author sent via the social network.
