Spring comes with a new edition of Visuali Italiane, the festival of contemporary Italian cinema. Opening, Paolo Sorrentino’s latest film

Visuali Italiane, the contemporary Italian cinema festival, returns in March 2026 with its fifth edition and a selection of recent films from Italian cinema, presented for the first time in Romania.

The opening of Visual Italiane 2026 takes place in Bucharest, on March 2, with “La Grazia”, the newest film signed by Paolo Sorrentino. The film marks a return for the director to a cinema of visual spectacle and carefully constructed detail. Starring Toni Servillo – an iconic actor of his cinematic universe – La Grazia offers a look at power and intimacy, at the fragility that hides beyond public roles, told with special attention to atmosphere, rhythm and image.

The film focuses on Mariano, the president of Italy, in the last months of his term. Respected for his rigor and known for discretion, he is going through a period where public decisions are intertwined with personal reflections. La Grazia captures the everyday life of a man in a symbolic position, beyond ceremonies and speeches, exploring the relationship between power, intimacy and time.

La Grazia had its international premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where Toni Servillo was awarded the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor. The film is distributed in Romania by Independenta Film and will premiere in cinemas on April 17. Full schedule and tickets here.

The Visuali Italiane 2026 selection by Eddie Bertozzi brings together 12 recent titles from Italian cinema, crossing different genres, styles and perspectives.

The films propose a foray through various spaces and eras – from cities charged with history and tension, to intimate, domestic or marginal settings – and outline an image of Italian cinema today, attentive to people, contexts and the transformations of the contemporary world.

“The 2026 selection brings together different voices, styles and sensibilities of today’s Italian cinema, in a program that talks about people, relationships and changing worlds. Visual Italiane remains a space of discovery, where films are thought to be experienced together, in an open and curious setting,” says Laura Napolitano, director of the Italian Institute of Culture in Bucharest.
