On the eve of the start of the new academic year 2024-2025, CFR Călători reminds students in Romania that they benefit from important facilities for rail transport throughout the year.

Students aged up to 30, enrolled in a form of education with frequency in accredited higher education institutions, including those from the Romanian Academy, have access to substantial discounts on train tickets, valid for all categories of trains, 2nd class.
Thus, students enrolled in full-time faculties can benefit from travel tickets with a 90% discount. They also have access to monthly passes with a 90% discount, which allow an unlimited number of trips over distances of up to 300 km. These facilities are offered for journeys made within the country and are valid for all trains operated by CFR Călători.
Special categories of students, such as those with one or both deceased parents or those who have been placed in state centers or with foster carers, enjoy total free tuition. For them, travel tickets and monthly subscriptions are available at a 100% discount, valid for the same unlimited number of trips and for distances up to 300 km.
For students who choose to travel in first class or use sleeping cars or bunks, it is important to note that they will have to pay the full price difference, the facilities offered by CFR only applying to second class tickets.
In accordance with the legislation in force, in order to benefit from these facilities, students must present their student ID card for discount/free transport, valid for the current academic year. Students in their final years no longer benefit from these discounts starting October 1, 2024. In the case of first-year students, they can use a certificate issued by the educational institution, valid until November 30, 2024, until they receive their ID.
As of December 1, 2024, all facilities for students, including those in the first year, will be granted exclusively on the basis of the student ID card for the academic year 2024-2025.
Online facilities for students 100% free
As of October 1, 2024, the online ticketing application has been updated to also allow free students to purchase tickets and season tickets.
They can create a personal account on the CFR Călători website, where they must fill in the data related to the faculty and the student ID series.
After confirmation of this information by the educational institution, the student will receive a user ID based on which he will be able to purchase tickets online.
Students who benefit from discounts or free tickets can purchase their travel tickets through several channels, including directly from ticket offices in CFR Călători stations and agencies or from ticket machines. Also, tickets can be purchased online from the website www.cfrcalatori.ro or through the CFR Călători application, either in electronic form (PDF) or printed with a QR code.
In the case of monthly subscriptions, they can be obtained through the same channels, including the mobile application in the form of a QR code.
Students who benefit from free of charge must make sure that on the back of their ID card is written “gratuitousness“, along with the signature and stamp of the higher education institution. In the absence of these documents, travelers will be considered without a valid ticket and will be penalized according to the regulations in force.
