Psychologists claim that they have noticed an increase in the number of patients born in the 90s, and they also have an explanation for this phenomenon.
Romanians born in the 90s, the most loyal patients of psychologists
According to psychologists, many of those who need help are Romanians born between 1990 and 2000. Specialists claim that this generation understood that the psychologist is no longer a shame or a fad.
“We can say that young people born between 1990-2000 are a generation of sacrifice. They are children raised in democracy, by parents who lived, a large part of their lives, in communism. Thus, some parents raised and educated their children in the same manner in which they themselves were raised. Meanwhile, the world has changed, and today's youth live a completely different life. Thus, certain experiences from childhood end up leaving their mark on adulthood. Many of those who come to the clinic come with this problem, with childhood traumas. Thus, we have many patients who have ended up being depressed, anxious or living with various fears, deeply planted since childhood“, stated Andreea Coman, a psychologist from Iași
Vices, another reason why young people go to a psychologist
Psychologists also claim that people born in the mentioned period often face addictions. Thus, there are more and more Romanians who turn to specialist help to get rid of vices and to understand their appearance.
“We live in real chaos, and the environment that surrounds us can be extremely confusing for the young, unformed. It's hard to tell right from wrong and so you can very easily fall into the trap of addictions. We are talking about drug addictions, gambling addictions, alcohol addictions and even pornography addictions. We have patients who face such problems and who, in the end, understand that they cannot overcome them alone. Many times, they are referred by relatives, by parents, to our offices. An addicted person can heal, overcome this problem. It is necessary, first of all, to understand the mechanism of addiction and the reason why it appeared“, adds the psychologist from Iași.
According to statistics provided by the World Health Organization, only 11% of Romanians have ever reached a psychologist. Thus, this is not the first option of Romanians when it comes to managing emotional difficulties. At the same time, only 44% of those interviewed see psychotherapy as a solution for their problems.
However, psychologists believe that the situation will change in the coming years.
“Generations are changing, and young people are aware that they need help, guidance, in some difficult moments. We believe these numbers will improve over time“, concluded Andreea Coman.
