The municipality of Timișoara is the first in Romania to have fixed radars integrated into the e-Sigur System. The radars are installed in two intersections in the city, and the tests will start on Monday, and the first fines will be issued in a few days.

According to the authorities, from the data collected so far, in Timișoara, 20,000 red light crossings are recorded every month.

“We have a widespread phenomenon of indiscipline in traffic, primarily due to the fact that there are no punitive measures and control over indiscipline in traffic”says the deputy mayor of Timișoara, Ruben Lațcau, quoted by Digi24. Once the new cameras are up and running, authorities want to expand the system to all busy intersections.

The e-sigur system operates from January 1, 2025 on 3 road sections (A1, A2 and DN2 Vrancea) and from March 1 it is operational at national level, on all road sections where the use of this system is required.

Basically, the radars are placed in the areas with road risk, the records being later analyzed. Violations are sanctioned according to the law, after the identification of the driver. The report is communicated at his home, without the need to stop in traffic.

This system involves the monitoring of road traffic by collecting data with the help of radar devices, gun type, from the endowment of the Road Police structures. TruCAM II type radars are located outside the roadway, mounted on a tripod, in a visible place.

The aim of the police is that by 2030 the worrying figures that place us in second place in Europe for the number of deaths caused by road accidents will be halved.

From the total number of serious road accidents, according to a road safety report of the Romanian Police, most of them, resulting in over 1,500 deaths and over 3,500 injuries, had excessive speed as the main cause.
