The dilemmas of a Romanian family that earns 85,000 pounds a year in England. “It's as if we suddenly changed our direction of thinking”

More and more Romanians are hesitating whether to return home or not, especially at a time when the standard of living is deteriorating more and more in the countries where they went to make ends meet. And in some cases, even those with high incomes are seriously considering whether or not it's worth staying there.

A Romanian living in Great Britain with his whole family is increasingly tempted to return home, even though he earns more there than he could in the country. In desperation, he seeks advice from other netizens on the Facebook group “Homecoming Group”.

“Long story! We are in a bit of a weird situation and maybe your advice could help! I came to the UK 10 years ago fleeing not from shortcomings, but from the system, from the evil of people and everything, and hoping that we would be able to give our daughter a better life. After an office life in Romania, in the UK I started from the bottom and after all our sacrifices and work, as a family we are in a somewhat ok material situation, I became the director of the company I joined 10 years ago, the wife he has a decent office job, together we earn around 85,000/year and our daughter is in a Grammar School for which he and his wife have prepared a lot!,” he began his post.

At the crossroads

Although the two spouses are materially achieved in Great Britain, they are now in great trouble and would be tempted to return to the country permanently.

“Now we are in the process of buying a freehold house right near the school, but it's as if we suddenly changed our way of thinking and it's like we want to go to Romania, naturally, it's a natural thought because there we have a house that's already paid for, and here in the UK we should start over with a new installment for the next 24 years, renovation (old house), etc… We are also in a burn out phase, and the lack of social life and family – it's almost enough! A friendly opinion would help. Thank you and all the best!”, he also wrote.

His call did not remain without effect, and hundreds of people commented and each tried to give a piece of advice, an idea, an insight. Their opinions were obviously divided, but many encouraged him to follow his dream and return home.

“As someone who also lives in the UK, I understand you perfectly. It seems that most of us who live in these lands sooner or later develop the same feeling: the sudden realization that all this terrible struggle, ultra-competitiveness pushed to the limit, professional advancement and material gain turned into religion, is not worth a penny, that life is passing next to us and that in fact we only want to live beautifully, in a different energy, with dear people around us. If that feeling has already woken up in you, there is no way back, the soul will stubbornly point you where you need to go”he wrote.

And he continued the same idea: “Like you, I earn decently, but if we can make at least half as much in Romania as we make in the UK, we'll still earn more. UK houses are of execrable quality and given the exorbitant prices (generally) I for one have not messed with them. Maybe you can use that money better in Romania, for a business or possibly even a construction of an incomparably better quality. In conclusion, I wish you courage to listen to your soul/spirit, it knows best what is good for us.”

“My big problem in the UK is social life. I have a business that works, I have everything I need, but life is not life. I understand you perfectly. Here we are caught in a wheel of mice”one lady told him, at which point others commented to her ladies.

It's not better in Canada either

“Not only there, it's the same almost everywhere. We have been in Canada for 13 years, we got an apartment and a house, and cars, everything. Only yesterday I bought the plane tickets to Romania, and in March I signed the deed of sale for the apartment. Does it sting me a little? Of course, our first house we worked on blew our caps… But in the end, for what? That we don't have parents, brothers, friends near us, my children don't know what “we go to mom and dad” means… My kids don't even know the names of uncles, aunts and cousins or where they were born ! They have no idea where the Carpathians are and who Stephen the Great is. So we come home! If we succeeded among foreigners, we can certainly succeed among our own….” said someone from Canada.

At which point other netizens stepped in and sent messages to the Canadian lady.

“With this confident attitude, you can't fail! Good luck, may everything be as you wish!”

“Good luck! We waited 24 years, the sooner the better. Canada is becoming uninhabitable, Indians everywhere, why I ran I found amplified. If until a few years ago it was at least compensating on the material side, now we have ended up living from one day to the next, worse than in Romania before leaving”someone confessed.
