Gheorghe Ștefan, general director of the General Directorate of Fisheries in the Ministry of Agriculture, entered into a plea agreement with DNA prosecutors for “carrying out financial operations, such as commercial acts, incompatible with the function“.

The criminal investigation file regarding the defendant together with the plea agreement were submitted to the Bucharest Court. He is accused for acts that took place between 2021 and 2024.
“Between September 2021 and August 2024, as state secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and later director general of the General Directorate of Fisheries, within the same ministry, in order to obtain sums of money, he carried out commercial activities on behalf of a commercial companies, consisting in the sale of fishing products, imported from Thailand, to various people who own companies with this object of activity, activities incompatible with the functions of secretary of state and director general within the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development“, prosecutors noted in the plea agreement.
Prosecutors set a one-year suspended prison sentence
Gheorghe Ștefan admitted his actions and agreed to the punishment established in the agreement concluded with DNA prosecutors:
“In the presence of the lawyer, the defendant expressly declared that he recognizes the commission of the deed he was charged with, accepts the legal framework for which the criminal action was initiated and agrees with the type and amount of the punishment applied, as well as with the form of its execution, respectively : – one year of imprisonment with the suspension of the execution of the sentence for a period of two years of supervision and the prohibition, for a period of five years from the definitive stay of the conviction by which the suspension of the execution of the sentence under supervision was ordered, of the rights: to be elected in public authorities or in any other public positions, to occupy a position that involves the exercise of state authority”, says a press release issued by the DNA.
The plea agreement was sent for trial at the Bucharest Court, where the magistrates will decide on it.
