The exhibition brings to the public more than 320 works, from paintings, sculptures and photographs, to films, posters, books, fashion pieces and traditional objects.

The selection includes creations from the heritage of the National Art Museum of Romania, from private collections, but also from over 30 national and international museums, including the Center Pompidou and Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, the National Gallery in Sofia, the Galagan Art Museum in Chernihiv, the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant, the Brukenthal Museum and the Library of the Romanian Academy.

“La Blouse Roumaine”, part of the permanent collection of the Center Pompidou in Paris, will be presented as a conceptual pivot of the exhibition. Through his aesthetic interpretation, the artist freed the traditional costume from propagandistic connotations, giving it an autonomous status and subsequently influencing post-war aesthetics and the emergence of Pop Art.

“The emblematic work (…) will be able to be admired in the exhibition “Romania – the identity representation of the popular port in art”, which will take place between November 21, 2025 and February 8, 2026, at the National Art Museum of Romania in Bucharest. Along with “La Blouse Roumaine”, visitors will discover other creations signed by Henri Matisse, in a visual dialogue that celebrates the beauty and symbolism of the traditional Romanian garment”. writes the community La blouse roumaine, on Facebook.

Matisse’s painting also had a major impact on international fashion, inspiring famous designers and helping to turn Romanian fashion into a global phenomenon.

The exhibition at the National Art Museum of Romania documents these artistic reinterpretations, but also the way in which the folk costume has been culturally valued and reinterpreted over the centuries.
