The Giurgiu Border Police is giving up a retired service dog for adoption. The German Shepherd is 2 years old

The Giurgiu Border Police Territorial Inspectorate announced that it will give up a service dog for adoption, after it was taken out of service. It is about a German shepherd dog, male, who is almost 2 years old. However, the assignment will be made with priority to the people who worked directly with the quadruped.

The decision is taken on the basis of the legal framework that regulates the situation of service animals after retirement and opens the assignment procedure to the entitled persons.

Service dog retired

According to the official announcement, the institution will sell for free “a service dog, German Shepherd, male, standard color, born on March 22, 2024, decommissioned.”

Following the internal evaluations, the animal was withdrawn from the operative activity, a fact that allows the surrender procedure to be triggered, according to the rules in force.

The service dogs of the Border Police are used in patrol, detection and intervention missions, and their withdrawal from the activity takes place following specific evaluations, established by internal regulations and normative acts applicable at the national level.

Priority for instructors and conductors

The announcement clearly states the legal framework of the award procedure: “The free transfer of service animals or animals intended for service, from the moment they are taken out of service or downgraded, will be carried out with priority to its instructors and drivers”.

Thus, the law gives priority to people who have worked directly with the animal, the measure aimed at ensuring continuity and stability for the retired dog, by keeping it in a familiar environment, alongside the person with whom it has already formed a relationship.
