Oțelea will remain in the history of Romanian handball as the only one who won the World Championship three times with the national team, in 1961 (West Germany), 1964 (Czechoslovakia) and 1970 (France).
He also has the bronze medal from 1967, in Sweden. He played a total of 92 times for the Romanian national team, scoring 147 goals.
