Historian Florian Bichir claims that according to CNSAS documents, Călin Georgescu’s mother was a member of the Legionary Movement and was part of the nest of Saint Nicholas. The revelations force Georgescu to clarify his position regarding legionnaires, says the former minister of education Daniel Funeriu.

Invited to the Check Media show on B1TV, Florian Bichir stated that he has the documents “for years” which certifies that Aneta Popescu, Călin Georgescu’s mother, was a legionnaire while she was an official at the Ministry of Agriculture.
“A check was made to see who is an assumed legionnaire, through the ministries. Confidential, where you are enrolled in the movement, in which nest, it’s a questionnaire. They are official documents. I am going to read to you from an extremely interesting document in which it says: « I am enrolled in the Legionnaire Movement, the Corps of Legionnaire Ladies, under the leadership of Mrs. C, I was assigned to the Sfântul Nicolae nest, Doamnei street, Adriatica building »). It is signed by Aneta Popescu, the mother of Mr. Călin Georgescu. She was not a sympathizer, she was a member of the Saint Nicholas nest”, said the historian Florian Bichir, who presented several documents on the show, which he stated were from the CNSAS archive.
Funeral: “Mr. Georgescu let it be understood that he admired Corneliu Zelea-Codreanu”
Former Minister of Education Daniel Funeriu reacted on Facebook shortly after the broadcast.
“I just saw the documents presented by Florian Bichir on B1TV with indisputable and indisputable facts (of course, I don’t think that Mr. Bichir is falsifying documents). I don’t judge anyone for their parenting choices, and no one can. What I can do, moreover, what I am obliged to do, is to ask Mr. Georgescu, as well as all the other candidates, to adopt a public position regarding Romanian legionaryism, historical or current. Mr. Georgescu let it be understood that he admires Corneliu Zelea-Codreanu, a man who entered the big stage of interwar politics through an assassination. A politician who, indisputably, has blood on his hands”, wrote Funeriu on Facebook, Saturday evening.
“To publicly condemn anti-Semitism”
The recent revelations force Călin Georgescu to make public, without ambiguity, his position regarding the founder of the legion and legionaryism, Funeriu wrote in the post.
“I ask Mr. Călin Georgescu to take a natural step and to break definitively from Romania’s dark past. To publicly condemn the anti-Semitism, the political assassination, Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, Ion Antonescu and all those who contributed, directly or through complicity, to the pogroms and persecutions of the 30s-40s. My position is clear and without any equivocation: the legion of Corneliu Zelea Codreanu and the Iron Guard, under the leadership of Horia Sima, are black episodes in the history of Romania”, noted Funeriu.
“Legionarism is not patriotism, but an aberration of it”
The former minister added that “Racial hatred, anti-Semitism, violence and political assassination as a means of eliminating opponents can neither be accepted nor excused.”
“Legionarism is not patriotism, but an aberration of it. The criminal communist regime was not patriotism, but an aberration of it. Patriotism unites, legionnaires divide. Legionaryism is hate, patriotism is love, acceptance of differences, calm embrace of opposing opinions in order to build the common good. Romanian society is modern, free and sophisticated. To move forward, it does not need the political tools of the past, much less those tools irrevocably condemned by History.
«That all may be one» asks Christ to the heavenly Father in the prayer in the Garden of Olives. It is one of the sources of inspiration for the vision of my candidacy: I want Romanians, divided by crises and cynical politicians, to find unity around the values of a serene and generous patriotism”.
“Never repeat the aberrations of history!”
Funeriu, who announced his intention to run in the presidential elections this spring, asks all those who aspire to the Cotroceni seat to clarify their position towards Legionarism:
“I invite all candidates to embrace this option: to capture all the energies of the Romanians to win the battles of the future, exercising our duty of memory towards the horrors of legionaryism and the criminal communist regime. Through education, let’s teach our children to celebrate our nation’s glorious past and learn never to repeat the aberrations of history!”.
We remind you that, in December, the former Minister of Education challenged his opponents to say “what they did, concretely, in public life”.
