For almost a month, starting on May 10, the more than 200,000 candidates tried to attract the votes of the citizens.
Four years ago, the electoral campaign for the local elections was marked by measures to combat the COVID pandemic. This year, the campaign for the local elections was dominant, overshadowing the campaign for the European Parliament elections, given that they were held simultaneously. An unusual aspect was the collaboration between the two parties in the governing coalition – PSD and PNL – who presented a joint list of candidates for the European Parliament, but had separate candidates in many of the important positions in the local administration, including the Capital City Hall, reports Agerpres.
Toni Greblă, the President of the Permanent Electoral Authority, recently declared that 494 candidates registered for the European Parliament elections. Among them, 167 are women, which represents 33.81% of the total. The Central Electoral Bureau has confirmed that 12 political formations and electoral alliances, together with four independent candidates, will participate in the European Parliament elections. After Sunday's elections, Romania will send a total of 33 representatives to the European Legislature.
In addition, for this year's local elections, 207,389 candidates were registered, a number 20% lower than four or eight years ago, according to the report produced by Expert Forum for the local elections of 2024. The head of the Permanent Electoral Authority stated that a number of 11,386 aspirants apply for the positions of mayors, of which 9,776 in the rural area and 1,610 in the urban area.
The youngest candidate competing in the elections scheduled for June 9 is just over 23 years old, and the oldest, “the senior of the candidates“, he is 100 years old.
The electoral campaign will end on Saturday morning, at 7:00 am.
This year, in Romania, all types of elections are held – European Parliament, local, parliamentary and presidential (with two voting rounds).
