The leaders of the governing coalition, Marcel Ciolacu and Nicole Ciucă, decided on Monday to increase the minimum wage for the economy, from 3,300 lei to 3,700 lei, from July 1, and that the amount will be increased from 200 to 300 lei not subject to taxation, from the minimum wage, according to “Adevărul” sources.

The coalition met on Monday, at 3:00 p.m., to discuss the increase in the minimum wage, a topic that seemed to have led to misunderstandings.

Moreover, the first vice-president of the PNL, Rareș Bogdan, stated in a televised interview that he wants to cancel “any kind of speculation that has arisen or been pushed into the public space”, also stating that the party “not opposed to raising the minimum wage.” “It is absolutely natural to support the increase of the minimum wage to 740 euros. We want compensation measures that commercial companies, employers, Romanian capitalists, Romanian private capital should receive, discussed together with relevant associations, with employers' associations, which propose that one of the measures be a deduction, a non-taxation of 300 lei from the increase of 400 lei in the minimum wage, from 3,300 to 3,700 lei, i.e. to 740 euros”, said Rareș Bogdan, at Antena 3 CNN.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said last week, after the Tripartite Council, that from July 1, the minimum wage will increase to 3,700 gross lei. “From July 1, the minimum wage will increase to 3,700 lei gross. At the same time, we will maintain until the end of the year the facility granted to employers regarding the 200 lei exempt from taxes. We are in the right direction towards the implementation of the European minimum wage“, said the prime minister.

Later, the president of the PNL, Nicolae Ciucă, said, in an interview with Euronews Romania, regarding the Prime Minister's statement regarding the increase in the minimum wage, that until now all important decisions have been discussed in the Coalition.

Asked if the Prime Minister's statement about raising the minimum wage is a populist approach, the Senate leader replied: “I didn't see it, I don't know the details of what happened, I can't comment.” “As a rule, all these aspects that concerned important decisions were discussed in the coalition. Probably, after the meeting with the Tripartite Commission, we will also have a discussion in the Coalition”, added Nicolae Ciucă.
