The licensure exam is being changed again. What proposal does the Ministry of Education come up with? Student reaction

The undergraduate exam could again include two tests: the written exam and the thesis. It is about a change put out for public consultation by the Ministry of Education and which, if approved, will apply starting next summer.

A series of changes to the framework methodology for organizing and conducting graduation, license/diploma and dissertation exams have been published by the Ministry of Education in consultation, according to edupedu.ro. The most important change is the introduction, after 10 years, of the obligation for students to submit both the bachelor thesis and the written exam at the end of their studies.

Specifically, Article 24, paragraph (1) is amended as follows:

(1) The license/diploma exam consists of two tests:

a) the evaluation test of fundamental and specialized knowledge;

b) the test of presentation and public support of the bachelor thesis/diploma project”.

Until now, since 2016, the two tests were at the choice of each faculty/university, and the methodology stipulated that one or two tests were taken, not both.

Student representative: “It neither helps nor confuses”

Sergiu Covaci, the president of the National Alliance of Student Organizations, told “Adevărul” that the Ministry’s decision must be interpreted according to the branch of science to which it is addressed. “For some, the written exam is pointless and can be easily botched, for others the project is pointless and also very easily botched. I mean that there are certain branches where we have an exam, but it becomes repetitive from year to year and does not reflect the reality when the grades come out. Or there are other situations where without the respective exam you may not be able to make a real classification”.

Sergiu Covaci specified that we are not talking about a reform in the true sense of the word, but about a modification that is not a priority at this moment. “But it is not a reform. That is, it neither helps nor confuses. It is perhaps a change that generates discussions about education in the public space. However, if we are to refer to the final evaluation methods, the system should somehow be rethought further back and not necessarily from the respective samples. I could neither agree nor disagree. I think it’s not a priority right now,” the student also commented.

He believes that students from the social and humanities would be somewhat disadvantaged compared to those attending technical faculties. “The volume of information they will have to assimilate will be much greater for them”, explained the president of the National Alliance of Student Organizations.
