Since the building in which the Ministry of Education carries out its activity is at risk of falling in the first earthquake of large magnitude, the institution requested more than 4.9 million lei from the Executive to rent a new headquarters, according to a draft Government Decision put in public debate.

The Ministry of Education currently operates on General HM Berthelot Street in Sector 1 of Bucharest. The building housing the institution was included in seismic risk category I.
“It is necessary to supplement the budget of the Ministry of Education for the year 2024 with the amount of 39,285 thousand lei in commitment credits and 4,910 thousand lei in budget credits, in order to cover the expenses of renting a building for offices for the Ministry of Education”according to the explanatory note.
“In order to eliminate the risk to which the employees of the ministry are subjected by carrying out activities in a building with RSI seismic risk, it is necessary to rent an office building that meets the technical requirements imposed by law“, the submitted request states.
The building in which the Ministry currently operates has been classified as seismic risk class I by technical specialists authorized by the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism and the Ministry of Culture within the Bucharest Technical University of Construction.
“According to the Memorandum approved by the Government regarding the allocation of budget credits and commitment credits necessary for the rental of a space related to the activity of the Ministry of Education, the estimated rental period is 5 years with the possibility of extension. For the following years, the Ministry of Finance will allocate budget credits”, it is also stated in the explanatory note.
