The National Council of PNL meets on Sunday, at the Parliament Palace to validate the candidacy of Crin Antonescu, former president of the party, at the May Presidential Election.

The meeting was convened following the decision of the PNL National Political Bureau and will take place on Sunday from 11:00. And those from the PSD convened extraordinary Congress, on February 2, to validate Crin Antonescu as a candidate for the presidential elections.
On December 23, 2024, the leaders of the PSD, PNL, UDMR and the representative of the minorities signed the Coalition Protocol. In this context, Ilie Bolojan announced that the former president of the Liberals Crin Antonescu will be the candidate supported by the coalition parties for the Presidency of Romania.
“Regarding the appointment of the candidate that PNL supports at the position of President of Romania, the office (political number) unanimously voted the convening of the statutory forum that validates the candidate, for the end of January, for January 26, in such a way that Mr. Crin Antonescu – the common candidate of the coalition – to be the candidate supported by the PNL in the presidential elections. This decision was voted today with votes. Therefore, PNL respects its commitment that it has taken by signing the coalition collaboration protocol. We trust the qualities of Mr. Crin Antonescu, in the experience he has accumulated and PNL will do everything possible during this pre-champion period to communicate the reasons for which we support this decision and for him to enter In the second round and win the presidential election“, Said the interim president of the PNL, Ilie Bolojan, after the meeting of the National Political Bureau of the PNL.
At the beginning of the year, Crin Antonescu announced that he considers the agreement concluded with the ruling coalitions for his support to the position of head of state, being dissatisfied with the undeclating of the respective parties regarding him and the lack of a clear date for conducting elections.
Subsequently, on January 16, the Government approved the decision on establishing the date of elections for the President of Romania. By this decision, the day of May 4 was established as a date for the election of the President of Romania.
On January 21, the PSD National Political Council validated Crin Antonescu’s candidacy for the presidential elections to decide in extraordinary Congress, on February 2.
