Romanian President Klaus Iohannis would not need any amendment to the law to be able to run for the Senate, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Saturday in Cluj.
The current law allows Mr. Klaus Iohannis to run for the position of president of the Senate
“I’m sorry to disappoint. I believe that in political life, as in executive life, it is good to assumedon’t hide behind the decisions that we leave the vote free; Romanians do not believe in such approaches. We will gather the National Permanent Bureau on Monday, to make a decision together with my colleagues, as is correct. On the way, together with Mr. Deputy Prime Minister, we also looked very carefully at the observations of the Legislative Council and asked our specialists, who have expertise, to give us a point of view today. At first glance (…) there is no need for additional legislation for the president, if he wants to run, to run. (…) I feel sorry for the coalition colleagues, maybe they should have gone into more depth or consulted, got out of their own circle, consulted with more specialists. If the specialists’ conclusion is the same as the Legislative Council’s observations, we will make a decision. If not, we will make another decision“, said Marcel Ciolacu, when asked how the PSD will vote in the case of the PNL project that allows President Klaus Iohannis to run for parliamentary elections before the end of his term as head of state.
During his visit to Cluj-Napoca, Marcel Ciolacu had a meeting with the Metropolitan of Cluj, Maramureş and Sălaj, Andrei Andreicut, as well as with Bishop Claudiu Lucian Pop, at the Greek-Catholic Cathedral of Martyrs and Martyrs of the 20th Century. He also made a visit to the project site for the realization of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute within the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca and later has a scheduled visit to the IT company AROBS.
We remind you that PNL submitted an amendment that modifies art. 5 (2) of law 208/2015 – regarding the election of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, considering that it would allow President Klaus Iohannis to run as an independent candidate on the lists of a political party.
To amend this law, the liberals requested the vote of the PSD partners, but Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu states that the procedure would only be related to the internal status of the PNL, and not to an amendment to the law, a legal conclusion to be analyzed, on Monday, in the meeting of the PSD National Office.
