The student from Târgu Mureș, who beat his conductor with his fists and feet in the school hallways, encouraged from the sidelines even by his mother, received his sentence. A too mild decision, even the judges say: “The goal of the punishment is far from being achieved”, reasoned the magistrate. His statement also comes in the context where the student declared that he has no regrets.

The 15-year-old student from Târgu Mureș who in the spring of this year put his conductor in the hospital was sentenced to an educational measure, similar to judicial control: six months of daily assistance and the obligation to follow psychological counseling. Why such a gentle decision? Because the Romanian criminal legislation does not provide for custodial sentences for minors who commit crimes whose sentences are less than 7 years, according to the decision of the Târgu Mureș Court. The decision is not final.
We analyzed the case together with the psychiatrist Bogdan Rusu who stated for “Adevărul” that, in general, problem children come from families that did not know how to impose clear, well-defined rules and benchmarks on them.
“Our problem is also a systemic one. Because, although in theory we know what we have to do, which is to take the child to psychological therapy, in practice, if we don’t do it, there is no coercion method. It all depends on the family whether or not they are willing to do this. And no limits can be imposed. The problem of these children starts from the family and from the period of their first years of life. If he was not taught from a young age with some limits, to know what is good and what is bad, to be able to differentiate between these two concepts, when he grows up, correcting a certain behavior that he has developed without these guidelines will be very difficult “.
A misunderstood parenting model
We are talking about education at a time that in some families does not exist. The child must be taught “YES” and “NO”, to know from an early age what is allowed and what is not allowed. It’s a trap many parents fall into: giving your child everything he wants just because he cries. A big mistake, the specialist believes.
“This parenting model is toxic and misunderstood, especially by Romanian parents. What do you do when the baby cries? You educate him. If you give in to this form of blackmail, you will always be blackmailed and manipulated. If he cries, then you give him what he wants. Then he starts screaming. And again you give him what he wants. After which he starts threatening and so on. On the other hand, if you don’t give in, you basically give him the chance to become, as an adult, a beautiful and balanced man. If you’ve lost this window, these precious years of his early childhood, it’s almost impossible to do anything after. It ends the way it ends because you, as a parent, have no way to stop it, and the system doesn’t have enough legislative levers either. In Romania, minors can only be deprived of their freedom in serious situations, when it comes to murder”, the doctor also stated.
Psychological counselling, friction to the wooden leg
Psychological counseling, the specialist believes, does not work in such serious cases. “He goes to counselling. So, and? The counselor just gives him some advice. The lady speaks, I see mine. The child knows that legally nothing can happen to him. This is because there is no liability, this part of the minor’s criminal liability has been greatly reduced”.
The specialist stated that this type of parenting is practiced, especially, by the peoples of Eastern Europe, including us, the Romanians. “If in a airport, a child screams, screams, demolishes everything, he is 90% Eastern, more than that, he is Romanian. If he is German, his parents correct him much faster. With them, children are taught yes and no. Only here, if the child cries, it’s a tragedy. And that breeds monsters.” the specialist also specified.
