The US Embassy stated, on Friday, that President Klaus Iohannis’ decision to withdraw his candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General is “an example of his commitment to ensure unity and consensus within the Alliance”.

“The decision of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis to withdraw his candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General is an example of his commitment to ensure unity and consensus within the Alliance. We are grateful for Romania’s contributions to the Alliance and for the efforts of President Iohannis to bring to the debate the critical issues on the Eastern Flank of the Alliance, including the Black Sea region“, states a response from the US Embassy sent to AGERPRES on Friday.
President Klaus Iohannis informed, on Thursday, the Supreme National Defense Council (CSAT) that he had notified the allies within NATO, at the end of last week, about the withdrawal of his candidacy for the position of general secretary of the organization.
“President Klaus Iohannis requested the members of the Council to pronounce on the candidacy of Mark Rutte for the post of Secretary General of NATO, they declared in favor of Romania’s support of the Dutch Prime Minister’s candidacy“, according to a press release from the Presidential Administration.
This after Hungary and Slovakia changed their minds and announced that they support Mark Rutte in the race for the post of NATO Secretary General, although at the beginning of the month Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared that he supports the candidacy of President Klaus Iohannis.
