The information comes two years after it was filmed “Top Gun: Maverick”which grossed over $1 billion at the box office and six Oscar nominations, including best picture and adapted screenplay (the film won an Oscar, for sound). The film is the sequel to 1986’s ‘Top Gun’, where the actor reprized the same role as in the first film.

Confirmed by Deadline and Variety, this project for a new one “Days of Thunder” is still in the early stages of development: a script has not yet been developed. In addition, Tom Cruise’s availability is uncertain, writes News.ro.

“Days of Thunder” is about the story of a young and inexperienced driver who was recruited to a NASCAR team. He received the first and, to date, only official film screenplay credit for developing the story with screenwriter Robert Towne. It was also through this film that he met Nicole Kidman, with whom he was married for 11 years, between 1990-2001.

The film was not a huge success, grossing $157 million worldwide on a production budget of $60 million, writes Variety.

Next year will see the third film in the “Top Gun” series, with a script already in the works, Paramount tells CNN.

While no deals have been finalized yet, according to CNN, the new film will reunite Tom Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski, as well as Miles Teller and Glen Powell, since it’s a sequel to “Maverick”.

Paramount has yet to issue a statement, and representatives for actor Tom Cruise did not respond to CNN’s inquiries.
