Turkey is investigating TikTok and other online platforms for how they handle children’s data

Turkey’s data protection authority has launched an investigation into six major social media platforms to assess how they handle children’s personal data, Reuters reports.

In a statement, the Authority for the Protection of Personal Data specified that the approach aims to protect children from potential risks in the digital environment and will analyze the data processing practices and security measures of the TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X and Discord platforms.

Turkey is also preparing tougher legislative measures regarding children’s access to social networks, including proposals to restrict their use by minors and implement age verification and content filtering mechanisms.

A recent parliamentary report suggests, for example, possible bans on users under a certain age and restrictions on use at night, in line with similar trends in other countries that are tightening their regulations to protect children online.
